A Fourth of Jersey
Last year, we marched in the Asbury Park parade with SaveTillie... how can we up the "Jersey-ness" of celebrating Independence Day?
Go hiking at Jocky Hollow! We spent time in the Wick House where the guide filled us in on the life of the wealthy farmer and family who lived there during the Revolutionary War with soldiers in their fields.
Afterwards, we went to the Ford Mansion (aka Washington's Headquarters) in Morristown. We just missed the reading of the Declaration of Independence (we were parking when the muskets went off to signal the end of the ceremony) but were able to take a tour of the mansion. The mansion is only open for special group tours and was closed when we had stopped there last year on our NJ Monthly Race Across the Garden State tour. We got to speak with "General Washington" for a bit and got to see where he hung his hat for a few winters. Not bad, but pretty darn dark.
We finished the day having a BBQ indoors at my mom's house. It had started to pour so we ate around the dining room table (not like the food was any different from what we were supposed to have... Chicken and ribs from the Portuguese place down the road!)
